Carnival 2024 Opens With Parade & Cultural Performances
The 62nd edition of Montserrat’s year-end Carnival officially opened on Saturday.
The occasion was marked with a parade and ceremony that featured Reigning Calypso Monarch Garnett “Sylk” Thompson, Reigning Miss Montserrat Nia St Claire, Jumpy Soca Monarch DiVicious & Lyrical Tool and Fenyx Creations Miss Teen Claricia Chambers.
There were also dances, steel pan renditions and performances by the Monarch.
This year’s Miss Montserrat delegates Mauricia Barzey, Shanna Johnson, Carisa Brudy, Essalene Martin, Anna-Kay Turner and Dante Daniel were also sashed on the night.
Director of the Montserrat Arts Council Kenneth Silcott in his opening remarks echoed previous calls for financial support for the island’s carnival.

Carnival was officially declared opened by Parliamentary Secretary Honourable Crenston Buffonge.
Honourable Buffonge said the Government is working to strengthen carnival to build the island’s reputation as a tourism destination.

This year’s carnival which runs from December 14th to January 2nd 2025, will be held under the theme “Awe People, Awe Culture, Awe Heritage”.

A former Coordinator of Culture is calling for the return of the Montserrat Arts Festival.
Herman Cupid Francis, says the return of the event to help ensure the survival of the island’s culture and develop the artistic skills of the children.
