Parliamentary Opposition Leader Contributes to Discussion on Government Decision for Port Development Project
Leader of the parliamentary Opposition, Honourable Paul Lewis, has weighed in on the discussion surrounding a decision taken by government, through Meridian Construction Company, to import sand and aggregate from a neighbouring island to aid in works on the New Port Development Project.
Local sand miners have voiced concerns stating that the decision taken is one that undermines their operation.
Mr Lewis feels the government should do all in its power to assist/support the sand miners since the action taken could have a negative ripple effect on the local economy.
Meantime, local economist and financial analyst, Peter Queeley has given an objective assessment of the issue at hand and what could be a solution going forward.
In his discourse, Mr Queeley says both the local sand miners and Meridian have their own expectations.
He pointed out that the sand miners were expecting to see some business by way of sale of sand and aggregate, while Meridian likewise were expecting the quality of product that would meet international standards in their construction works.
