Honourable Crenston Buffonge to Participate in United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai

Minister for the Environment, Honourable Crenston Buffonge is set to participate in the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled to take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The conference will include the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28).

The minister will be travelling with principal environmental officer, Barry Mahabir, and acting director of the Energy Unit, Marissa Allen.

Honorable Buffonge gave some insight on the importance of this year’s COP meeting as well as information on the presentations he will be making at COP 28.

This summit holds immense significance as leaders gather to discuss strategies to limit and prepare for the imminent challenges of climate change.

The primary focus of COP28 is to uphold the collective commitment made in Paris in 2015, aiming to restrict long-term global temperature rises to 1.5°C.

This target is paramount in mitigating the severe impacts of climate change, as emphasized by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) or the situation will worsen.

This year's Conference of the Parties (COP), from an environmental perspective, serves as an opportunity to explore potential areas of collaboration, including renewable energy and the blue economy.

The summit aims to sustain and elevate the level of commitment to climate change issues, building upon the achievements of previous Conference of the Parties meetings.

The primary focus is on fighting the climate emergency and promoting coordinated action to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change.
