The Royal Montserrat Police Service is Warning the Public About Social Media Fraudsters
Times of crises and disasters such as the COVID-19 Pandemic and the volcanic eruption in ST. Vincent and the Grenadines, can unfortunately be prime opportunities for cyber-criminals to attempt stealing people’s personal information and resources using fraudulent or sham attacks or misinformation.
The Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS) is therefore warning residents on Montserrat of increased scams and fraud attacks during these times.
A senior officer has told ZJB News that the RMPS has received reports that they have been lured into probings from who appear to be scammers soliciting personal information, bank details and other data by telling them that they have won large sums of money.
The RMPS is warning people against this urging because it says people can only win money only if they are involved in some activity or business with such returns.
It says they have been also hearing of persons setting up Go-fundme pages purporting to raise money in the name of assisting, in one such case, the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines who have been displaced by the erupting La Soufriere Volcano.
The senior RMPS Officer is warning persons that unless they can verify the source, they must not disclose their personal information or bank and other details.
He is emphasizing that people should make sure that they are in communication with reputable and legitimate institutions and organizations like Banking institutions, the Red Cross and Rotary Club before divulging such information, and make corresponding donations.
The Senior cop is sounding a serious warning to the public not to respond to any dubious request for information, and to report such actions to
the police.
