The Government of Montserrat Asked to Review its Social Welfare Policy in the COVID-19 Situation

A local economist and financial analyst is cautioning the government of Montserrat against the cap that it would have placed on the number of residents who can access social welfare assistance in this uncertain COVID-19 situation.

During his press conference on Wednesday, Premier, the Honourable Joseph Farrell said there would be no additions to the list of social welfare recipients as a cost-cutting measure.

He said those already on the list would continue to receive their benefits.

However, Peter Queeley, speaking on the Breakfast Show “What’s on your Mind” segment Thursday, urged the government to first relook the situation before making what he described as  “such a hasty decision” in this volatile,  Covid-impacted economic climate.
