Ultrasound Services Resume at Glendon Hospital
Persons on Montserrat no longer need to go to Antigua to conduct ultrasounds.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services has announced the resumption of its ultrasound services at the Glendon Hospital. This service will now be conducted using a new ultrasound machine, which was procured by the Ministry of Health, under the Small Capital Asset Fund (SCAF), administered by the Ministry of Finance.
In a press release, Director, Secondary Health Care Services, Arlene Ponteen said Richard Soutar of International Med-X recently undertook the commissioning of a new Phillips ultrasound machine at the Glendon Hospital.
She adds that while on island the biomedical engineer trained the ultra-sonographer in the use of the new machine. The ultrasound machine produces images of any soft tissue, such as the liver, spleen, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.
This technology is used to assist in the diagnosis of a number of conditions and is also important in monitoring the progress of a pregnancy. Ms. Ponteen said the new ultrasound machine features improved capabilities, such as 3D and 4D imaging which improves the visibility of organs and allows expectant families to view the facial features of their unborn child.
To access the ultrasound services at the Glendon Hospital, a referral from a doctor is required, and an appointment must be scheduled at the Radiology/X-ray Department.
