Principal of the Montserrat Secondary School Cherlyn Hogan has expressed gratitude to three local doctors who recently engaged with students during a month long health initiative.
Dr. Tiffannie Skerritt-Flemming, Dr. Sharra Greenaway-Duberry, and Dr. Braimah Kassim held information sessions with the students to raise awareness on menstruation and menstrual health. The sessions were part of the recently concluded Period Passion campaign, held by the Rotary Club of Montserrat during September.
Principal Hogan thanked the doctors for the informative sessions, where vital knowledge was shared on different aspects of menstrual health and welling.
“We extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Tiffany Skerritt-Fleming whose sessions helped students understand what menstruation is and why it occurs, the phases of the menstrual cycle, what normal period looks like, and the physical and emotional changes that may accompany it. Her emphasis on healthy menstrual hygiene practices equipped our students with knowledge that promotes confidence and well-being. We also thank Dr. Sharra Greenaway-Duberry for her insightful presentation on irregular periods. She helps students recognize symptoms such as missed periods, heavy bleeding, frequent or prolonged cycles, and understand how menstruation relates to pain, anemia, school absenteeism, and emotional well-being. Importantly, she guided them on when medical advice should be sought, reinforcing that their health deserves attention and care. To Dr. Braimah Kassim, we express deep appreciation for his impactful session with the boys of the school.”
By addressing myths and stigma surrounding menstruation, Dr. Kassim “encouraged empathy, respect, and understanding.”
He highlighted the role that family plays in supporting young women, offered practical ways they can assist with menstrual health management, and emphasized the importance of creating environments where young women feel safe discussing their experiences.
According to Mrs. Hogan across all sessions, “our students were fully engaged, asking questions, sharing their thoughts, and seeking clarification. Their participation showed maturity and curiosity, and it is our hope that they will continue to reach out to legitimate sources for guidance as they navigate their health and well-being.”
The principal also thanked the Rotary Club of Montserrat for the initiative, saying the Club plays a vital role in supporting the holistic development of the students. She was speaking ahead of the Flow Wid Di Riddim Jam, the culminating event of the campaign, held last Friday.
