Residents Urged to Brace for Inflation Due to Imposed Tariffs

A regional trade expert is warning residents of Montserrat and other Caribbean islands to brace for inflation in the prices of imported goods and services, as a result of the new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Lecturer in economics at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus, Dr Antonio Alleyne, says inflation is expected since Montserrat and the other islands rely heavily on imports, with the United States being a major supplier.

He says the Central Banks in the region should also be paying close attention to the situation.

Dr Alleyne says regional bread and butter industries across the Caribbean could also feel the rippling effects of President Trump's move.
