Montserrat & Region Encouraged to Own and Buy Local Following Tariffs Imposed by US

Prime Minister of Barbados and CARICOM Chair, Mia Amor Mottley, has issued a warning to the people of the Caribbean, including residents of Montserrat, of the impact the tariffs imposed by the United States would have on everyone, region wide.

President Donald Trump imposed a 10% baseline tariff on all imports to the United States.

Ms Mottley said the impact would be felt through the purchasing of food, clothing or electronics.

In her capacity as chairman of CARICOM, Mottley said this would have a spillover effect on the tourism industry of the member states, including Montserrat, since people in the source markets would have reduced spending power.

She urges countries to grow their own and buy local.

In a message to United States president Donald Trump, she said the region was too small to have an impact on their economy.
