Montserrat Legislative Assembly Approves Formation of Two Special Committees

The Montserrat Legislative Assembly has approved the formation of two special committees to enhance parliamentary oversight, and review legislative procedures.

The Public Accounts Committee which examines the value for money of public spending in Montserrat, and holds the government to account on the delivery of government policy, will be chaired by Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition, Honourable Paul Lewis .

Other members - Honourable Nyota Mulcare, and Honourable Dwayne Hixon.

The other established group, the Standing Orders Committee, is responsible for reviewing the rules that regulate the way Ministers conduct business of the legislative assembly.

Honourable Veronica Dorsette-Hector is the Chair of this committee. The other members are Honorable Donaldson Romeo, Honourable Nyota Mulcare, a representative from the Attorney General’s Chambers, alongside Honourable Akira Missick from the Turks And Caicos Island, and the speaker of the house Majorie Smith.

Meantime, Premier, the Honourable Reuben T. Meade has defended the appointment of Honourable Akira Missick from the Turks And Caicos Island to the Standing Orders Committee, dismissing “distance” as a barrier.
