Montserrat’s Math Students Make Regional Statement in CXC May/June Examinations
Students in Montserrat have exceeded their regional counterparts in Mathematics during this year’s Caribbean Examination Council… (CXC) Caribbean Secondary Education Certification (CSEC) May/June Examinations.
Preliminary results from the Montserrat Secondary School show a 51.35% pass rate in Maths, up from 48% in 2023.
This figure significantly surpasses the region’s 36% average announced by CXC and neighbouring islands, Antigua 28.4% pass, St Lucia’s 44%, Jamaica’s 33.4%, Guyana’s 31%, and St Vincent’s 31.60%
A pass rate of 62.16% was recorded for English A, down from the 87% recorded for 2023.
Meantime, the Montserrat Secondary School is reporting a decrease in Grades 1 - 3 passes in the Caribbean Examination Council… (CXC) Caribbean Secondary Education Certification (CSEC) May/June Examinations.
38 students wrote CSEC this year with 290 subject entries at General and Technical Proficiency Levels.
Preliminary results show students attaining 202 Grade 1 - 3 passes, yielding a pass rate of 69.7% down from the 80.4% obtained in 2023.
Montserrat recorded 100% passes in 7 of the 23 subjects taken at CSEC, namely; Agriculture, Industrial Technology (Building), Office Administration, Principles of Accounts, Physical Education and Sport, and Technical Drawing.
A pass rate of 93.3% was recorded for Principles of Business while Biology, Information Technology and Physics obtained pass rates between 85% and 87.5%.
Six English as Second Language students wrote a total of 40 subject entries and were successful in 25 of them yielding a pass rate of 62.5%.
Six, form 4 students wrote a total of 9 subject entries in the areas of Visual Arts, Technical Drawing and Theatre Arts. An overall pass rate of 88.8% was obtained.
Meantime, one student obtained passes in nine subject areas.
Tyler Lewis received 2 Grade 1s, 4 Grade 2s and 3 Grade 3s
Passes in eight subject areas were obtained by 6 students namely; Barrington Chalmers, Narissa Farrell-Bramble, Sammay Sinlair, Etieyen Udoh, Amari White and Ramiah White
Seven students obtained passes in 7 subjects. They are Shannon Campbell, Kehli Chambers, Elise Gerald, Marian Gonzalez Yero, Kendicia Meade, Gerron Simpson and Charleson Thompson.
Six students recorded passes in 6 and 5 subjects respectively.
A key indicator for education is the percentage of students in the year five cohort who obtain 5 or more CSEC passes including English and Math. This year 36.1% the year five cohort obtained 5+ CSEC passes including Math and English.
This performance is down from the 47% obtained in 2023.
At Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) Level, thirteen (13) students from the Form Five cohort wrote a total twenty (23) subject entries.
Master and Competent levels were achieved for 13 subjects, yielding a pass rate of 56.2%.
