Agriculture Minister Urges Residents to Support Local Agriculture
Minister for Agriculture Honorable Crenston Buffonge is restating the need for persons to support local agriculture over imported food.
Speaking on the “Your Government and You” radio programme last Wednesday, Minister Buffonge explained how local food is superior to imported food, highlighting the trust one had with local producers as well as the benefits to the local economy.
Buffonge also discussed the Ministry’s efforts to support local farmers and reduce imports.
Meanwhile, The island’s food security could be at risk if Montserrat continues to rely on the importation of food from other places.
This stark warning was issued by former Parliamentary Secretary Veronica Dorsette-Hector, during a radio programme hosted by the United Alliance political party on Thursday.
Dorsette-Hector called for measures to ensure there is a supply of healthy and wholesome foods for the residents of Montserrat.
Another candidate Anne Thomas says storage facilities are necessary in order for Montserrat to meet its CAICOM mandated target of reducing food imports by 25 per cent .
