Stephen Doughty Appointed as Minister for Overseas Territories

A new minister has been appointed for Montserrat and the other Overseas Territories.

Stephen Doughty received his instrument of appointment following the Labour party’s resounding victory in the UK July 4 general election.

In welcoming the appointment, the non profit group “Friends of the Overseas Territories” says it hopes to see increased dialogue between the United Kingdom and the Overseas Territories as they work to navigate modern challenges, and wish him every success in the role.

For his part, Doughty says it is a true honour to be appointed by the Prime Minister as Minister of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.

He says the government will reconnect with allies and forge new partnerships for the UK to deliver security and prosperity at home and abroad.

Doughty replaces David Rutley, who had spearheaded work on the UK/Overseas Territories Strategy which was halted following the surprise announcement of the general election.

The strategy sets out the renewed aims for the UK Government across several areas: economies, environment and climate, defence and security, governance, and communities.

It was developed through collaboration with the Overseas Territories.
