Biodiversity Workshop Highlights Government's Conservation Efforts
Montserrat’s environment was in the spotlight at a workshop for Biodiversity Condition Assessment of Protected Areas here on Monday.
The workshop was held by the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Housing and the Environment (MALHE), in collaboration with the United Kingdom’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC).
Speaking at the opening ceremony, permanent secretary at MALHE, Beverly Mendes, gave some insight into the purpose of the activity, noting some of the programs conducted by the ministry that focus on conservation of biodiversity.
These include the coral reef research, sustainable sargassum management project, bird surveys, and bird monitoring.
Mrs Mendes also shared some statistics on the various species found on Montserrat.
Minister for Agriculture and the Environment, Honorable Crenston Buffonge also gave remarks at the opening ceremony.
He spoke about the factors that affect Montserrat’s ecological systems as well as how to avoid loss of biodiversity, which many social structures are based on.
