Government of Montserrat Embarks on Drummonds Housing Re-Development Project
The Government of Montserrat is giving priority to the continued development and improvements to its social housing portfolio.
One of the sites earmarked for re-development is the Drummonds area, and work is about to start on Phase One of the project.
Several Family Units were constructed in 1997 and 1998 in an attempt to curb the acute housing shortages at the time.
These houses were constructed from T-111 plywood sheets, which have long passed their lifespan and need to be rebuilt.
Funding was approved to the amount of 1.5 million EC Dollars, under the CIPREG Programme for Phase 1 of the development at Drummonds. This funding allocation is for supporting infrastructure and the construction of two new houses.
Preliminary work is being undertaken. This project is in line with the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Housing, and the Environment’s Strategic Objective to expand and improve the housing stock.
Additionally, there would be an improved quality of life for the beneficiaries, employment opportunities will be created in the construction sector, and there would also be an increase in commercial activity.
