New Electoral Commission Appointed

A New Electoral Commission has been appointed.

In accordance with part 5 of the Montserrat constitution Order 20pointed by the Governor in accordance with section 78 10, there shall be an Electoral Commission and the Chairman and the other members of the Commission shall be apof the Constitution.

The new members of the electoral commission are Barrington Chalmers (Chairperson), Lovetta Silcott (Member), Atiesha Lewis (Member), and Gracelyn Cassell (Member).

They are appointed for a term of five years.

The Electoral Commission is an independent body set up under statute to oversee elections, and who work to promote public confidence in the democratic process.

Under section 78 of the constitution, the commission’s main functions include prescribing the qualification for the selection and appointment of all officers of the Commission; developing and designing training programmes for persons appointed to be election officers, including such programmes as shall ensure that the functions of the Commission are carried out in an independent and impartial manner; designing a continuous non-partisan voter education programme for voters; and regulating the conduct of election officers.

General elections on Montserrat are constitutional due in late 2024.
