The Montserrat Volcano Observatory Allays Fears of Increased Volcanic Activity with Sulfur Smell Across Islands
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory, MVO has moved to dispel any concerns regarding the Soufriere Hills volcano once more this week.
After residents were apprehensive, Monday, about the smell of sulphur in the air, especially in the northern part of the island, MVO has informed the public that the odor is a result of the current unusual wind direction, which is blowing volcanic gases to the north.
In a social media release, the MVO adds that this occurrence does not signify any change or increase in volcanic activity and that volcanic gases are constantly released.
The organization says the smell is only noticed when the wind carries it in that direction.
