Antiguans Vote Today in what Analysts Predict will be a Tight General Election Race
Antiguans are today heading to the polls in one of the most closely contested General Elections in the country’s history.
The polls opened at 6 this morning and will close at 6 p.m.,eastern Caribbean time.
Gaston Browne’s Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party is seeking a third consecutive term, but the incumbent Prime Minister is facing a strong challenge from the United Progressive Party, UPP and the Democratic National Alliance, DNA.
The Barbuda People’s Movement, BPM, led by Trevor Walker, is looking to retain its parliamentary seat to represent Barbuda.
The country’s Electoral Commission has already sworn in all election day workers and says it is ready for a smooth day of voting.
At least three election observer groups representing the Organisation of American States, CARICOM, and the Commonwealth will be monitoring the country’s electoral process today.
The observer missions have been meeting with various social and political groups in the country, including the political parties, the National Youth Parliament Association of Antigua and Barbuda, and members of the media.
