Government of Montserrat Works to Fulfill Promise of Regulating Food Costs

The Government of Montserrat is moving swiftly to fulfill its promise to regulate the price of food and other items on the island.

Steps have been taken to establish a Prices Commission.

The Commission, when properly constituted will advise the Government on matters pertaining to the Distribution and Price of Goods in Montserrat, and champion the development of effective policies geared towards addressing consumer related issues within the marketplace.

It will also advise the Government on matters related to consumer protection, consumer awareness and consumer education, on a mechanism to ensure that price control regulations are adhered, and recommend policy improvements to government with regards to consumerism and commodity pricing.

The Prices Commission is established under the Distribution and Price of Goods Act, which was passed into law in 2013.

It will therefore have the authority to make investigations and report on all instances of non –compliance or any other discrepancies by merchants.

It will also be tasked with keeping records of customer complaints and queries and addressing them.
