Montserratians Reflect on June 25, 1997 Volcanic Eruption

Montserratians at home and in the diaspora are on Saturday reflecting on the June 25, 1997 volcanic eruption.

19 persons tragically lost their lives here at approximately 12:55pm, when a dome collapse at the Soufriere Hills Volcano occurred.

In the following 25 minutes, a series of devastating flows swept the northern flanks of the volcano, down Mosquito Ghaut and followed the Paradise River almost to the sea.

The flows and associated surge clouds damaged or destroyed between 100 to 150 houses, with the villages of Streatham, Dyers, Harris, Bethel, Bramble, Trants, Farms and Spanish Point.

Initially 8 people were confirmed dead, and a further 11 missing. Five people also suffered serious burns.

To mark the occasion, a Service of Remembrance will be held in London at the Shiloh Pentecostal Church in Dalston where the names of the 19 victims will be called.

The service, called “Roll Call Montserrat” will also pay tribute to Montserratians and residents who have died of other causes since July 25, 1995, the date when the Soufriere Hills Volcano roared back to life.

The service, which officially begins at 12:30, will be preceded by a roll call of those who have passed on.

It will be carried live on ZJB Radio and the Spirit of Montserrat.
