Calypso Eliminations Carded For December 3, 2022
Montserrat’s Carnival 2022 season gets underway with the much-anticipated Calypso Eliminations this Saturday, December 3 at Festival Village in Little Bay.
Head of the calypso committee Theodore Phillip says a total of 33 artistes are currently rehearsing with the Black Rhythms Band, which is led by former multiple calypso monarch and songwriter Cecil “Cepeke” Lake for the first competition of the season.
Speaking on the latest Carnival Vybz show on Radio Montserrat, Phillip said that 15 artistes will advance to the semi-finals from Saturday’s eliminations.
Of the 33 calypsonians taking part in the eliminations, there are several newcomers plus former monarchs.
Anticipation is high to hear newcomer Destiny Weekes, the daughter of five-time monarch Everton “Reality” Weekes, who is considered one of the island’s top calypsonians from the 70s and 80s.
The Former monarchs who are competing are Kelvin “Tabu” Duberry , Roland “Kenzie” Johnson , Joseph “Pops” Morris , Herman “Cupid” Francis, Baptist Wallace , Kevin “King Nattie” Farrell , Garnett “Sylk” Thompson , Jester “Iceman” Weekes, and Silvina “Kandie” Malone.
Bank of Montserrat Ltd. Montserrat Tourism Division, and Friends of Calypso in the Diaspora have sponsored the special prizes in categories, including Best Environmental Song, Best Newcomer, and Crowd Favourite.
The 15 selected from the eliminations will compete in the semi-finals which follows the official opening of Montserrat Carnival 2022 on Saturday, December 17, 2022.
The Calypso Finals is slated for Thursday, December 29, 2022.
