Another Delay in the Set Up of an Independent Office Here

There has been another setback in the process of establishing an independent audit office here.

The government announced on Tuesday that it was withdrawing the National Audit Office Bill from the Legislative Assembly.

In making the decision, Premier, the Honourable Joseph Farrell says there has not been any resolution to the concerns raised by staff members and government.

The Audit Office Bill was hailed as a momentous occasion for Montserrat.

At the time of its reintroduction in February, Legislators said it elevated and empowered the people of Montserrat, and also protected the independence of the Office of the Auditor General.

The National Audit bill in its current form directs the Auditor General to report directly to parliament and not to ministers; thereby ensuring there is independence and transparency in its operations.

She points out that the constitution gives parliament the authority to set the terms and conditions of employment, including remuneration and allowances for the Auditor General.
