Government of Montserrat Continues Progress on Solar Farm Project
Work has started in earnest on the 750 kilowatt solar farm in Look Out.
Earth moving equipment are preparing the site for the solar panels that will be installed as part of phase two of the project, funded by the European Union.
Phase 2 of the solar PV power project was launched in the General area of CARICOM Village in Look Out on Tuesday January 26th.
The EC $9million project, follows on from the completion of phase 1 in 2019 at the Factory shell in Brades.
Once completed a number of key institutions would benefit from the backup connections to the grid.
These include the Lookout Primary School, the Glendon Hospital, the Disaster Management Coordination Agency, the John A. Osborne Airport and the Lookout Warden Supported Units.
The solar system has the potential to provide 44 per cent of Montserrat’s peak demand and just over 13 per cent of the island’s annual electricity generation.
The Florida based company Salt Energy was awarded the engineering consulting contract.
They are supported by Rocky Mountain Institute, AEES Ltd. of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Asante Energy of Canada, and the Barrett Energy Resources Group of Massachusetts.
Minister of Communication, Works, Energy and Labour Dr the Honourable Samuel Joseph says the aim of the Government is to make Montserrat the first country globally, to be 100% green by 2030.
