Businesses on Island Are Victims of Scam, say Police
The Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS) has reported that it has received information that
businesses on Montserrat have been the victims of a scam.
In a press release, the RMPS says persons have been
calling a number of business places and other providers of telephone Top Up Services, impersonating police officers and other prominent individuals on
Island, and requesting that the service providers top up their cell phones.
The RMPS has revealed that in all of the cases, the persons are not who they purport to be and could not be identified later.
It stated categorically that none of these requests were made by police officers.
The RMPS notes that an interesting feature is that all of the numbers are non-Montserrat numbers.
It is therefore inviting the service providers and more so the public to be extremely vigilant and put systems in place to ensure that persons are properly identified before sending top up that is unpaid for.
The RMPS is warning that any matter that gives rise to suspicion should be reported to the Police promptly.
The RMPS press release warns that at this time of year, scammers and fraudsters become extremely prevalent, and that the general public musts be vigilant and be on the look out for potential fraudulent emails and or WhatsApp communication, especially those indicating that they won large sum of monies.
The RMPS concludes that If it is too good to be true and then it is not true, these must be brought to the attention of the police.
