Critical Facilities in Northern Montserrat to Benefit from Soon to Start Back-up 750kW Solar Power Grid in Lookout
Critical facilities in the north of the island would soon have access to more reliable and greener source of energy.
Phase 2 of the solar PV power project was launched in the General area of CARICOM Village in Look Out on Tuesday.
The EC $9million project, follows the completion of phase 1 under the PDM administration in 2019 at the Factory shell in Brades. It is being funded by the European Union under the European Development Fund (EDF 11).
Project Manager Owen Lewis says a number of key institutions would benefit with backup connections to the grid, including the Lookout Primary School, the Glendon Hospital, the Disaster Management Coordination Agency, the John A. Osborne Airport and the Lookout Warden Supported Units.

Minister with responsibility for Communications, Dr,. the Honourable Samuel Joseph says the start of the project is a significant achievement for the people of Montserrat, who have faced many challenges including the coronavirus pandemic.

Permanent Secretary Colin Fergus, Meantime, said once this second phase is completed, Montserrat would have 1 megawatt of solar power, which would equate to 10 percent of the island’s power needs.
PS Fergus also revealed that an energy task force has been established by Minister of Communication, Works, Energy and Labour Dr., the Honourable Samuel Joseph.

Work on the solar project is scheduled to begin in the coming days.
