Reviving Pan Music in Montserrat

The project aimed at Reviving Steel Pan Music in Montserrat is beginning to make substantial progress.

The island, last Friday received several steel pans from Pan Trinbago as part of the project funded by the Basic Needs Trust Fund Under the 9th BNTF programme.

The pans received are high quality chrome plated instruments complete with leather carrying cases and purpose built collapsible stands as well as pan construction and tuning tools.

The BNTF also received training manuals for persons who will be learning as well as teacher’s manuals for persons trained to teach persons here as part of an ongoing steelpan music development programme.

Once given the all clear from the both  Governments (Montserrat and Trinidad), 4 instructors in various aspect of Steel Pan Music and pan construction, will be on Island to work with local steel bands, both adults and school steel bands and other interested persons in the community to build capacity and competency in the art form.

They are also expected to conduct training in Musical Theory, pan playing techniques, pan construction, tuning and arranging of pan music.

The project is funded by the Caribbean Development Bank and the Government of Montserrat at a cost of ECD$97,000.00.
