Sand Miners Hit the Jack Pot Following Recent Flooding in the Belham Area
The November 9th Freak storm created one of the largest Lahars on Montserrat since the late 2000’s.
That’s according to Volcanologist at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory Dr Adam Stinton.
The persistent rainfall triggered landslides, land slippages and rock falls from elevated terrain, blocking several roads across the island.
There were also reports of homes in low-lying areas being flooded and ghauts overflowing their banks.
Dr Stinton has been investigating the impact of the flooding on the Belham Valley.
In an interview with ZJB News, he said the event underlines the importance of staying away the area when rain is forecast.
Dr Stinton said thanks to the amount debris brought down by the Lahar, it is now an opportune time for sand mining.
