Government makes progress on several transformational projects
The Leader of Government business says plans for several transformation projects are progressing well.
Premier the Honourable Joseph Farrell says these include plans for the construction of new hospital, the resurfacing of the John A. Osborne airport runway, works on Blocks L & M at the MSS along with staff room and library.
Other projects where there are notable progress are the construction of a control tower, procurement of a hotmix plant, the consultancy on social housing and work on A1 road project, the volcano interpretation center, and the Port development project is progressing well through the procurement process for the detailed and design contract.
Meantime, progress continues to be made on the hospital project, which is the major project under the Capital Investment Programme for Resilient Economic Growth CIPREG.
Premier Farrell reports that cabinet has agreed to ring fence 15 million pounds for the hospital project so that it delivers the high quality and fit for purpose healthcare facility that Montserrat so badly needs.
The preliminary designs by Article 25 are progressing ahead of the programme and these designs will be finalized and shared through another round of stakeholders engagement later this year.
In more positive developments, Premier Farrell says the government has secured funding and awarded the contract for the construction of the control tower at the John A Osborne airport.
When completed it will bring the airport in line with aviation regulatory requirements.
The construction phase will also create local employment in the sector over the next 9 months.
The government has also secured funding for the award of a contract for the runway resurfacing project.
This is a critical infrastructure improvement, which will provide an entirely new runway for take off and landing.
The government continues to work with ASSI to ensure the works are completed well ahead of March 2021.
