First Sea Cadet Detachment Launched Last Saturday
The Montserrat Secondary School Cadet Corps hosted a special ceremony and parade at the government headquarters in Brades last Saturday.
The occasion marked the official formation of the first Sea Cadet Detachment, an enrollment parade for new recruits, and end-of-year promotion for Army Cadets.
Honourable Minister of Education, Health and Social Services, youth affairs and Sports, Delmaude Ryan delivered the feature address at the enrollment ceremony.
Twelve students from the MSS Cadet Corp registered for the training programme, which was facilitated by Paramanand Jailall of the marine Unit of the Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS)
The Sea Cadet programme is the first major innovation to Montserrat Cadetting since girls were formally allowed to join in 1987.
This change occurred under the watch of the late Margaret “Annie” Dyer-Howe as the responsible Minister. Before that, legally only boys were allowed to join.
It is anticipated that at the end of the training programme, the Sea Cadets will join the team of Marine officers within the Integrated Border Security Unit, thus strengthening capacity on the MV Heliconia Star.
