Montserrat Up Against St. Maarten in First Round of LIDC 2019

Montserrat is gearing up for the 47th Annual Leeward Islands Debating Competition...LIDC in Antigua this week.

The February 28th to March 3rd competition will see 5 islands competing for the coveted Dr. George Irish trophy. They are Antigua, St Kitts, Montserrat, Nevis and St Maarten.

Montserrat is scheduled to take on St Maarten on Thursday.

Team Montserrat will argue the moot “Emphasis on environmental conservation retards the capacity of
developing nations to compete in the global economy.”

The final is set for Sunday March 3rd with the topic “Countries have not done enough to afford the LGBTQ community the same legal rights and protections as other citizens.”

The LIDC was founded in 1972 by the late Dr. George Irish.

Traditionally, the competition brings together sixth formers from participating islands to debate issues germane to region.

Today, the debaters are not limited to sixth formers as other secondary and tertiary level students have also represented their respective territories.

The competition has become an important forum, promoting interaction among young people from across the Leeward Islands as they engage in one of the oldest activities of civilization.

Montserrat has won 8 times since the competition’s inception, with the last time being in 2014 at home.
