Government Scales Back on Port Expectations, says Minister

Montserrat may not receive the Port breakwater and berthing facility that has been advertised by the Government of Montserrat.

In the first in a series of Facebook live videos, Minister of Communications and Works, Dr. Samuel Joseph says upon taking office, he has discovered that the cost of constructing the port, exceeds the budget that has been allocated.

Now that the real cost of the port has been introduced, Minister Joseph says the Government would now have to scale back its expectations.

The Government of Montserrat committed to the development of a breakwater of approximately 250-300 meters in length to allow for the docking of cruise and cargo ships.

The United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), under UKCIF, is funding the port through a 14.4 million pound grant administered by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)

The Government of Montserrat will provide counterpart financing of 7 million pounds made available by the European Union.
