Montserratians Remembering Hurricane Hugo 17th September 1989

Montserratians were on Monday reflecting on one of the most devastating disasters in the island’s history.

Hurricane Hugo damaged nearly every home, along with schools, churches, the hospital, the police department, the government headquarters, and the main power station.

Ten persons died, 89 were injured, and damage reached at least $260 million, making it the most expensive hurricane in the history of Montserrat.

Four major disasters occurred on the 17th of September…..Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the Pan Am Flight Crash in 1965, the great flood in 1981 and a major eruption of the volcano in 1997.

Educator Edith Duberry says these events have had a cumulative effect on the psyche of Montserratians.
