MSS reports marginal decline in CSEC Passes

A preliminary analysis of the results of the 2018 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate, CSEC Exam at the Montserrat Secondary School shows a slight decline in the pass rate.

The MSS this year recorded a 73% pass rate which is above the regional average, but 2.8% lower than the rate obtained last year.

Of the 352 subject entries in the exams at the General and Technical Proficiency Levels, the acceptable grades of 1 to three were obtained in 256.

A 100 percent pass rate was recorded in eleven of the 22 subjects sat in the exam.

They are Principles of Business, Agriculture, Industrial Technology Building, Industrial Technology Electrical, Information Technology, Technical Drawing, Electronic Document Management and Preparation EDPM, Principles of Accounts, Geography, Additional Mathematics and Physical Education.

Pass rates ranging from 90 to 97 percent were recorded in Office Administration, Physics and Chemistry while an 86 percentage pass rate was obtained in Biology.

78% of those who sat the Spanish exam passed while 73 percent of those who wrote French were successful.

66.7 percent of this year’s cohort passed English A, a similar pass rate to what was obtained in 2017.

Mathematics also recorded a decline with only 47% of students passing the exam.

This is an almost 10% decline in the pass rate recorded the previous year.
