Improved CXC Passes In Some Areas, Major Concern Over Subpar Results

Improved pass rates for students from Montserrat and other parts of the region, who sat the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exam in June.

59 percent of students in the region received acceptable grades.

The figures were presented by CXC’s Registrar Glenroy Cumberbatch on Friday during a ceremony held in Grenada to officially launch the 2018 results.

The statistics showed an overall improved performance of 90 percent in most subjects, but Mathematics continues to be a challenge for most students which became evident when a regional pass rate of just over 60 percent was revealed.

Spanish and other foreign languages also did not show much improvement which was reflected in the less than 60 percent overall pass rate.

The CXC Registrar said there is a great concern about the number of students who are producing subpar results.

Cumberbatch said that a significant number of students have failed each subject they attempted.

Cumberbatch said the examination body will be asking governments and business people within the region to use a wallet of certification to bring people into the world of work instead of just a CSEC certificate.
