Former Speaker Speaks On the Importance of Select Committees

A former Speaker of the House of Assembly has underscored the importance of select committees in the island's parliamentary process.

Sir Howard Fergus, who was the longest serving Speaker in Montserrat's history until his retirement in 2009, says one such committee is the Public Accounts Committee.

He says its main function should be to provide an important check on government decisions, and in particular, spending.
