Her Excellency the Governor, Harriet Cross is encouraging more entrepreneurial ventures on Montserrat. The governor was speaking in part 3 of her six-month update interview series on the Governor’s Office Facebook page. Governor Cross says there is a lot of potential in Montserrat, and called on persons to share their ideas that may contribute to the future of the island. RMPS Says Probe Continues Into Galloway Hit-and-Run Incident

The Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS) is reporting that there has not been any breakthrough in what has been described as a hit-and-run accident involving Nathan Galloway. Galloway was injured in a night-time incident earlier this year in which he sustained substantial in juries. Commissioner of police Mark Payne says the findings from items which were sent off island for forensic examination are inconclusive and as such they are unable to charge anyone with causing Galloway’s injuries. He however says the investigations are continuing

United Alliance Administration Continues Focus on Sustainable Economic Development for Montserrat

The United Alliance (UA) Government is celebrating its first full year in office. The first year in government, following the October 24 victory at the polls, would likely have been dominated by  work on significant development projects supported by the United Kingdom (UK) government. The United Alliance’s first year is also marked by their efforts to fulfill campaign promises, such as strengthening the economy and developing infrastructure, as part of the broader UK-Montserrat development partnership. Some of the Key developments in the UA’s first year include the New Governor, Her Excellency Harriet Cross taking up her appointment here in April 2025, succeeding Sarah Tucker; Continued UK support where the UK-Montserrat development partnership, a £40 million program aimed at supporting infrastructure and economic growth, continued during this period. Additional work on major projects, such as the new National Hospital, continuing under the new government; Focus on economic growth: The alliance’s first year is marked by a continued focus on implementing policies aimed at fostering economic growth and encouraging private sector development; and Strengthening partnerships: The United Alliance government has been focusing on strengthening partnerships with the UK and other international partners, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development and economic support. Appearing on the “What’s On Your Mind” radio programme on ZJB Thursday, Public Relations Officer, Jenzil Skerritt stated that the job is far from complete. He called for a united effort to move Montserrat forward into sustained growth and development.

Local Surgeon Specialist Warns Residents about Unhealthy Lifestyle Habits

Montserrat’s surgeon specialist Dr. Braimah Kassim is warning residents about their lifestyle habits. Dr. Kassim says this is contributing to an increase in complications from non communicable diseases such as hypertension, heart disease and diabetes. He points out that changing diets can help reverse conditions like Type 2 diabetes, particularly when combined with other lifestyle changes like exercise and weight loss.

MUL Urges Customers to Report Damaged Appliances

Persons who suspect power outages damaged their appliances are urged to report these to Montserrat Utilities Limited (MUL). This from Manager Julian Daniel. He appeared on ZJB Radio Wednesday morning to discuss the recent power outages, which have plagued the island for several days.  Daniel explained why it is important to report these instances of electrical equipment failure to MUL. Daniel also said that although not all equipment failure can be attributed to the utility company, MUL is looking at ways to implement additional protection for persons.

Aging Farming Population seen as Risk to Sustainability of the Sector

An aging farming population poses a risk to the sustainability of the sector in Montserrat. This was gleaned from a survey conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture. The results show that the majority of farmers, fishers and agri-producers are between the ages 45 to 64. Only 25 per cent are between 25 and 44, and 1 per cent below the age of 25. According to the survey, which was commissioned between July and September, the agriculture sector is heavily male dominated with 75.3 per cent between the ages of 45 and 64. The national survey marked a significant step toward strengthening Montserrat’s food systems and enhancing support for key producers in the island’s agriculture and fisheries sectors.  Principal Agricultural Officer, Melvin Lindsey, says it provided an insight into the types of production that are more popular among producers.

Montserrat Tourism Authority Announces Winners of Tourism Week Photo and Video Competitions

The Montserrat Tourism Authority (MTA) has announced the winners of the Tourism Week Photo and Video Competition. In the best photo category, Ian Gerald won with his photo of a masquerader against the backdrop of the Soufriere Hills Volcano. According to the MTA, this photo powerfully blends culture, heritage, and nature, reminding us of the island’s enduring beauty and resilience. Mr. Gerald received EC$300 for his winning entry. In the best video category, Isaiah Lee won with a narrated video highlighting the importance of protecting the environment. Mr. lee’s prize is EC$500 and a return ticket to Antigua, compliments of BMN SVG Air. The MTA extends thanks to everyone who participated and helped celebrate Montserrat’s beauty through their lenses. Bethesda Methodist Church Celebrates 140th Anniversary

The Bethesda Methodist Church on Montserrat recently celebrated its 140th Anniversary as a chapel. On October 12th, a special service was held at the Church in Cavalla Hill to observe the special occasion. The service also acknowledged the over 192 years of Methodism on Montserrat. Premier and Minister of Finance and Economic Management, the Honourable Reuben T. Meade, made remarks at the service, highlighting the church’s history and its benefit to Montserrat’s community during the volcanic crisis and hurricanes. In his remarks, President of the Leeward Islands District of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas, Bishop Reverend Damion Hughes noted the church’s resilience, having faced several natural disasters. Chairman of the Montserrat Christian Council (MCC), Reverend Shane McFarlane also gave greetings, encouraging the church, as they look towards the future, to continue spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.
