Premier Meade Responds to Residents’ Concerns Over Upcoming Prisoner Transfer

Premier the Honourable Reuben T Meade has responded to concerns on the transfer of a prisoner from Diego Garcia to be housed at His Majesty’s Prison here.

According to The Times newspaper in the United Kingdom, the prisoner - a convicted paedophile on the island of Diego Garcia - will serve out his sentence in Montserrat as part of prime minister Sir Keir Starmer's deal with Mauritius to "surrender" the Chagos Islands.

Addressing public fears, Premier Meade called into the what’s on your mind radio programme on Tuesday, to urge resident not to be swayed by fearmongering.

He says the arrangements for the transfer is a controlled process with clear legal agreements in place.
