Government Moves to Ease Cost of Living Burden
The United Alliance (UA) Administration says it intends to take action to help ease the burden on residents caused by the cost of living situation on island.
The governing party says the problem will be tackled from several angles.
This includes long term plans to strengthen the economy by welcoming investors to the island.
The government is already in talks with investors as part of the Government’s push to create economic independence.
Speaking in parliament last week Minister for Education and Health Dr., the Honourable Ingrid Buffonge underscored that the potential for the development of the financial services sector is also ripe with promise.
She says the development of this sector is expected to bring wealth through companies’ registration and taxation, and through job creation.
Dr Buffonge says while there are companies presently interested in other aspects of investment, new private sector investments are likely to bring jobs, and with them higher salaries.
The Education and Health Minister stated that UA’s plans for agriculture should also result in more food items being grown and produced locally, a healthier option for the people of the island.
She went on to explain that to reduce the cost people have to pay for healthcare, the government is working hard to ensure off island travel for certain investigations are reduced.
The intention, Dr Buffonge says is to ensure that the provision of multiple aspects of care are available locally.
