Work Continues to Tackle Threat of Invasive Species on Montserrat’s Borders

Work is being done in order to protect Montserrat’s borders from invasive species.

Representatives from the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International- CABI and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) have been traveling between the five UK Overseas Territories, including Montserrat, to engage with various stakeholders to produce recommendations on how to tackle these issues.

The delegation, contracted by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) traveled between January 13 and 23, to assess the UK-OTs for their capacity to keep Invasive Non-Native Species out of their borders.

Discussions were held with stakeholders, including Customs, Port Health Authorities and the Department of Environment.

Assessments were also carried out on policies, protocols, as well as inspection of tools and equipment, human resources and infrastructure.

As a result of the discussion with the stakeholders, recommendations, will be put forward to strengthen the current biosecurity practices at the border in Montserrat and the other UK-OTs.

These recommendations will be discussed with the UK-OTs prior to the team submitting their final report to the RSPB.
