"No Evidence of Invasive Species" brought in by the Port Development Project
The Port Development Project says there is no evidence of invasive species being brought onto the island.
Confirmation was made by project engineer Glenroy Foster during a recent town hall meeting to update residents on this transformative project.
Mr. Foster stated that both the contractor, Meridian Construction Limited and the government have been doing due diligence to ensure that the giant African snail or any other invasive species are brought in.
He revealed that a chemical bait has been spread around the site office in Little Bay and the laydown area in Piper’s Pond as part of bio-security measures being employed.
There is also weekly treatment of materials with disinfectants for all materials brought in, along with the use of copper mesh.
The Port Development Project includes the creation of a safer harbour than what exist currently.
It offers protection to the present jetty that would allow for the berthing of the ferry, fishing vessels, the police launch and small cargo vessels.
The project, which is financed by the UK government, is expected to improve the island’s tourism product and business by allowing for more cruise ship calls, safer vessel handling, improved cargo handling and better turn around time.
The new pier will be able to accommodate vessels up to 187 meters to include mid-sized cruise ships and cargo vessels.
