Montserrat Volcano Observatory After-School Club Announced for Secondary School Students

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory has announced an after-school club through the Montserrat Secondary School.

The program will run from January 24th, 2023 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school from 2:30pm –4pm.

Transportation will be provided for all students home at the end of every session.

According to the MVO, the after-school club is an activity under the “Curating Crises” project which explores the influence of colonization and post-colonial governance on volcanic unrest or volcanic eruptions management in the Eastern Caribbean.

It also focuses on how science is created, integrating both academic but also local knowledge.

The goal of the afternoon club is to sensitize students on Montserrat’s recent volcanic history, raise volcanic risk awareness, and give the students an understanding of how the interaction between history, politics and environmental crises can impact a country and its people.

The after-school club is multifaceted and will capture many subject areas to include, Geography, History, Social Studies, Arts, and Physics.

Students will participate in diverse and hands-on activities to include panel discussions, reviewing of archives, field trips and be part of an exciting community project.

The sessions will be guided by local, regional and international specialist.
