Third Annual Montserrat Conference Confirmed for October 22, 2022
Organizers have announced the date for the third annual Montserrat Conference.
The online symposium is scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd, at 10:00 a.m. via ZOOM and will be livestreamed worldwide, under the theme “BEING A BRITISH OVERSEAS TERRITORY.”
Chairperson Shirley Osborne says one of the major obstacles to Montserrat’s advancement, is the current state of the island’s sense of identity and autonomy, as well as its relationship with Britain.
She says the conference, will therefore feature speakers and panelists from home and from seven other British Overseas Territories.
These include Bermuda, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands, and Anguilla, St.Helena and the Falkland Islands.
The Conference will explore the similarities and differences in the relationships between the various Overseas territories and the UK government, to help the people of Montserrat understand some of the finer points of those relationships, pinpoint areas for potential engagement and cooperation that would help developing a more mutually satisfactory relationship with the administering powers.
The Montserrat Conference is a public policy research group that works collaboratively to identify ideas, policies, actions and resource needs that are vital to Montserrat’s development.
Osborne says Conference ’22 will support the mission of the organization to engage with Montserrat’s political, social and economic leadership.
She explains that the members are committed to publish policy papers and enhance public education through debate, discussion, conferences and other activities that will stimulate open-minded dialogue and advance informed citizen engagement.
