The Montserrat Mountain Chicken Recovery Programme Reports a Successful 2021

The Montserrat Mountain Chicken recovery Programme says it was successful in protecting the endangered species in 2021.

In a review of its activities, the programme, funded by the Darwin initiative says all the frogs were Chytrid free throughout the year.

The Mountain Chicken Recovery Programme is a collaboration between European conservation institutions and the governments of Montserrat and Dominica to save this species from extinction.

The programme says apart from protecting the fragile mountain chicken it also collaborated with other agencies.

The team worked along with the University of Exeter on the Turtle Project,  Educated numerous students throughout various schools, and began an Iguana Project alongside the Durrell Wildlife Fund and Department of Environment.

Under this project Iguana samples were collected that will identify Iguana species on island and aid in a species management plan.

Officers also completed various online courses to help further their knowledge, while it acknowledged the crucial role the Department for Environment in training the team in bird ringing and surveying alongside bat surveys.

During the year members of the team visited Dominica and shared their experience in field work first hand.
