UK House Speaker to Take Forward Montserrat’s Case for New Parliament a New Parliament Building

A permanent building to house the Montserrat Legislative Assembly was a topic for discussion at a meeting for Speakers of the House of Assemblies across the British Overseas Territories (OTs) on Wednesday.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the UK House of Commons met virtually with Montserrat’s Speaker of the House Charliena White, as well as Speakers from Anguilla, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Saint Helena and Turks and Caicos Islands for a formal introduction.

Also on the agenda was the planning of an upcoming OT Conference and also the lack of a parliament building on Montserrat.

Speaker of the House Charliena White told ZJB news that coming out the meeting, a formal request has been made for such a parliament building with signatory support from the other OT’s.

In the form of a letter, the request is expected to be advanced to the UK’s Foreign Secretary.

Meantime, Speaker Hoyle tweeted, that it was interesting to hear about how Parliaments in the Overseas Territories (OTs) work and to discuss the challenges they have all faced during the pandemic.
