Montserrat Port Authority to Attempt Recovery of Abandoned Yacht
The Montserrat Port Authority…MPA will make another attempt to recover a 60-foot yacht on the island’s eastern shoreline.
MPA Manager Joseph O’Garro told ZJB News that the Port earlier this week enlisted the help of a tug boat (Tug Istria) from Antigua to remove the vessel which has been beached in the Tar River area for more than a week.
Mr O’Garro stated that after 3 attempts on Tuesday, the recovery effort was abandoned because adequate resources were not available at the time coupled with unfavourable sea conditions.
The Royal Montserrat Police Service reported that the vessel named 'Good Luck' ran aground on Thursday May 13 about 8:30 am.
However, neither the captain nor the crew are known to the authorities at this time.
Mr O’Garro noted, that the owner of the vessel has a year to put forward a claim after which the Port will have the authority to dispose of it in a way it deems fit to recover the costs of the wreck recovery.
The Port Manager added that in the event of a successful recovery, he anticipated that the yacht will be moored at Port Little Bay until it is claimed by the owner.
O’garro however says at this time, the priority is to recover the yacht as quickly as possible.
He says that a fresh attempt will be made soon to refloat the vessel which appears to be in good condition despite being stranded.
Mr O’Garro would like to thank Manager of the Antigua Port Authority Mr Darwin Telemaque for providing what he has described as speedy and invaluable assistance.
He also thanks the members of the combined team - Montserrat Port Authority, Customs and The Royal Montserrat Defense Force and the Disaster Management Coordination Agency… DMCA.
