MVO Re-Iterates St. Vincent's La Soufriere Will Not Trigger Activity at Montserrat's Soufrière Hills
Officials at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is once again reminding residents and persons within the region that the volcanic eruption taking place in St Vincent will not trigger activity at the Soufrière Hills volcano.
MVO made the clarification on Monday after it received questions on social media.
The MVO said volcanoes on individual islands are formed by the same process, that is subduction at the plate boundary.
The MVO said however, the volcanoes do not share the same magma chamber and are not linked by long underground magma conduits.
It added that a volcanic eruption on one island therefore cannot trigger an eruption on another island.
This is not the first time that the MVO or the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre has had to make a statement on the matter.
