Abusing Someone on the Internet Would Soon Become a Criminal Offence in Montserrat

Parliamentary secretary, the Honourable Veronica Dorsette Hector has hailed the inclusion of an amendment to the Penal Code that provides redress for persons who are harassed on the internet.

According to the proposed legislation a person who intentionally or recklessly cyber bully another person can be criminally charged.

Persons who disseminate information and images knowing it to be false, damages the reputation of another person or subjects another person to public ridicule, hatred or embarrassment also face stiff fines.

Mrs. Dorsette Hector, meanwhile, addresses concerns that the amendment seeks to curb freedom of expression.
