Cutting Down of Trees Raises Environmentalist's Concerns
An environmentalist is advising against the careless cutting of trees locally, which may lead to negative impacts on the climate.
Stephen Mendes, technician within the Department of Environment, says it is advisable not to cut trees carelessly, especially if they are not being replaced.
He adds that trees are very important for the environment as they provide oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide and help slow the rate of global warming.
Mendes adds that persons who are engaging in developmental activities, should seek advice from the Department so that they can be provided with useful tips and information before they move forward.
He also says that persons on Montserrat can support the environment in various ways, including participating in the upcoming annual National Tree Planting Day in December, which has been celebrated for around 30 years.
