The Government of Montserrat to Hold Public Meeting on Decriminalizing Marijuana
The government of Montserrat is making good on its promise to decriminalize the use of marijuana.
A stakeholders meeting is planned for this Thursday, December 10th, 5 PM at the Montserrat Cultural Centre to get the public’s feedback on the issue.
On the table is a proposal by the government to amend the Drug Prevention and Misuse Amendment Bill to decriminalize the use of marijuana.
This would allow persons to carry small amounts of the substance for personal use.
The proposal also calls for the records of persons who have been convicted, to be erased.
The measure when passed will follow similar efforts by several countries in the Caribbean. A bill to decriminalize up to 15 grammes of cannabis for personal use was passed in the Antigua House of Representatives in 2018.
In October this the Dominica Parliament passed a similar Act, which allowed possession of 28 grams or one ounce or less of Marijuana.
