Deputy Premier Apologizes For "The UK Owns Us" Comment

Minister of Social Services Hon. Delmaude Ryan has sought to clarify a statement which she made during the latest round of debates for political candidates organized by the Youth Parliament.

The issue at hand has to do with Mrs Ryan stating “The UK owns us” which has raised the ire of a number of persons in the community who felt that the utterance by the Minister was in poor taste.

However, speaking during the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) Hour of Radio Montserrat, Minister Ryan said her utterance was taken out of context. She also offered an apology to those persons who were offended.

Minister Ryan, who is also the Deputy Premier, said the statement was merely attributed to Montserrat’s financial situation with the British, and how development aid was rolled out with a number of accompanying conditions.
